Nike, Google Kick Off Social-Networking Site

Joga.com is the latest social networking site on the block. The site was created by Google and Nike, which targets football fans. For now, it is by invite only but it should be expected to go live by this week.

“The two companies have been working on the site for the past eight months and are expected to publicly unveil it this week, BusinessWeek has learned. Nike is supplying the content, and Google is the technical partner. But the site looks similar to other social-networking outlets such as News Corp.’s (NWS) MySpace.

ONE GOAL. Joga.com is a free network where members will be able to create Web sites and send e-mail, photos, and video clips, as well as access Nike content related to its sponsored athletes such as Brazilian superstar Ronaldino or U.S. soccer prodigy Freddy Adu, according to Nike officials who confirmed the new initiative. Google officials did not return calls.”

I wonder would this be better then Orkut, hope Nike and a niche footballer market would be able to make this a success.

You can Host a Party and Get Sued?

It’s true.  If you host a party and serve alcohol, you could be held liable for personal injury and/or property damage in many states under the following scenario:

1. You served alcohol to a person.
2. You knew, or should have known, the person was intoxicated.
3. You knew the person would soon be driving from the party.
4. That person caused an accident after leaving the party.

Drunk Driving

More than ever, municipalities are cracking down on drunk drivers. Websites such as http://www.alcoholalert.com keep track of drunk driving statistics in the US, and even with all the new laws and publicity about the problem, the numbers are alarming.

The legal alcohol intake limit in most states is .08 Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC). Statistics on drunk driving show that 41% of all traffic fatalities related to alcohol usage happen at a mere .15 BAC - so it’s easy to go from legally sober to dangerously drunk - the difference can be about three beers, two “shots,” or three glasses of wine, depending on your tolerance, body weight, or if you are drinking on a full stomach.

There is as much alcohol in one ounce of hard alcohol (whisky, rum, etc.) as there is in a 12 ounce beer or a 6 ounce glass of wine. On average it takes about one hour after ingestion for the alcohol from one drink to work its way through the body.

How to Host a Safe Party

So how do you throw a safe and fun party without adding to the drunk driving statistics? Here are some tips to help you arrive safely in the New Year, have a memorable birthday, or other party such as St. Patrick’s Day. * Obviously the easiest way is to not serve alcohol at all. There are some great tasting pseudo alcoholic beers on the market, and sparkling cider, alcohol-free wine and “mocktails” are other alternatives.

* If you choose to serve alcohol, stop serving it at least two hours prior to the end of the party.

* Always provide snacks to keep guests from drinking on an empty stomach. Not nuts or salty chips! They make people
want to drink more. Try a fruit or veggie tray instead, and finger sandwiches are good as snacks too.

* Hire professional bar tenders who have had server training to prevent over-serving and serving guests under the legal drinking age or serve the alcohol yourself and don’t drink. A drunken person in charge of monitoring other people’s intake is never a good idea.

* Only allow X number of drinks per person and keep track of how much each person is served.

* Don’t rely on physical appearance alone to determine if a guest has had too much to drink. Some people have a higher
tolerance to alcohol and don’t show outward signs of intoxication. One drink can impair a person’s ability to drive safely.

* Confiscate car keys as your guests arrive, and give them only to designated drivers, or make the car owners pass a breathalyzer test if available.  Some alternatives are to call a cab, plan ahead by hiring a shuttle or limousine
service, or offer to drive intoxicated guests home yourself if you haven’t consumed any alcohol. Take it seriously, and
don’t let intoxicated guests talk you into giving them their keys.

And don’t just give them some coffee and hope for the best. It is a myth that coffee or cold showers will help someone sober up.  Only time will do it. If you are in charge of throwing the company party, consider having it at a hotel and reserving some rooms so guests won’t have to drive home.

If you plan ahead, you can have a fun party without making your friends become drunk driving statistics.

It’s easy to think that it only happens to others and not to you, but according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3 out of 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related accident at some point in their lives.

Considering that over 17,000 people in the US were killed in alcohol-related crashes every year for over twenty years, you may already know someone whose life has been devastated by careless alcohol use.

Sky City 1000 Tokyo - Should humans embrace it ?

What is Sky City 1000 ?

Ans : “Sky City 1000 is a possible future urban project aimed at helping put an end to major congestion and lack of greenspace in the Tokyo, Japan ward area.

It consists of a building 1000 metres (3280.8 feet) tall and 400 metres (1312 feet) wide at the base, and a total floor area of 8 km² (3.1 miles² or 1976.8 acres). The design, proposed in 1989 by Takenaka Corporation, provides for 35,000 full-time residents and 100,000 workers. It is comprised of 14 concave dish-shaped “Space Plateaus” stacked one upon the other. The building would include residences, offices, commercial facilities, schools, and theatres.” -Wiki

Was watching discovery a moment ago, Extreme Engineering about “Sky City 1000″ in Tokyo was on. Although an old topic, I was amazed by the idea of having an entire city located in 1 single big building.
Imagine, not needing to beat rush hour traffic, waking up 30 minutes before work and you still wouldn’t be late, lunch can be a home cook meal in home with the “Mrs” or even taking an hour nap at home.

Sky City 1000 diagram

Besides these nice perks, having both office and home located in the same building does have disadvantages too. First your boss can easily pay you a visit if you call in sick, being call back during off days may become of a norm, no more transport claims for sales personals as it is likely your clients are located in the same building. These are just some disadvantage of having a city in 1 big building.

In the show, Discovery Channel touched on the problems and solutions needed to put this plan into reality. From elevator systems, to weathering nature’s elements and the possible threat of a fire. Seems like the engineers have found most of the solutions (via existing building methods and solutions being thought out in universities), as it was covered during the show. If Japan manages to complete such a project, I bet it could be a possible means for stopping humans from destroying forests for more land.

For now, if I were given the choice, I wouldn’t mind moving into a home like this would you ? Wonder would I be offered a place when the buidling gets completed.

After the show, I Googled the topic and here are the sites which have good info on the topic

“What to do if you’re a church youth group leader and need some money? Make an erotic calendar of course. That’s what Stefan Wiest did in Germany. Not surprisingly, some have called his taste into question. Nudes posing in church, they feel, is going a bit too far.”

IPods are hotter then cell phones as christmas gifts

Its Christmas time and being the season of giving, everyone is flocking to buy gifts for their family and friends. When it comes to high tech gifts, consumers have an unlimited choice to chose from, digital cameras, game consoles, handhelds pda, cell phones, ipods, laptops and many more.

If you are looking for a music/mp3 player as a gift, which is your most preferred brand, Apple’s Ipod, Creative Zens or other mp3 players?

Personally, I would get an Ipod as it looks so much better then its competitors and I am not alone. Morgan Stanley polled consumers on their purchase plans during this holiday season. The polled results showed that consumers planned to buy more Ipods then cell phones. On top of that, “Of all the consumers planning to purchase an iPod this holiday season, only 4- percent said they would purchase another brand of MP3 player if a store was out of their desired model. Also interesting, more people plan to buy iTunes gift cards this season than non-iPod branded MP3 players.” - Appleinsider.com

Sex in Singapore City

Sometimes, just sometimes, you wonder if we spend too much time thinking about sex.

The Durex survey places Singapore at the bottom rung - second from bottom, to be exact - in a worldwide survey of 41 countries. Singaporeans only have make love an average of 73 times a year, says Durex.

I refuse to believe the figures.

Go to Joo Chiat, Geylang or even Changi Village on any given night. One look at the action there and you know Singaporeans do not have a limp sex drive. The streets are packed with revellers looking for a wild night of sex in the nearest budget hotel!

Worst, guess who’s last on the survey?

Japan.

No… you have got to be kidding.

No joke. 41 out of 41 countries. Right at the end. Rock bottom. LAST!!!

Japan??? Have you seen the amount of pornography that comes out from there? With so much porn, a thriving industry, the cutest girls in the world, hentai anime and what-else-have-you, how do Japanese only have sex an average of 45 times annually?

Surely something must be wrong with the research methodology!

On the other end of the sexually-active spectrum, is the United States. The US is not on top - that honour goes to Greece, which topped the poll with 138 romps a year - but Americans obviously think of sex quite a bit, if this MSNBC article is to be believed.

A Seattle man died after engaging in anal sex with a horse at a farm suspected of being a gathering place for people seeking to have sex with livestock, police said Friday.

The horse involved in the incident was not harmed, and an autopsy of the unnamed man concluded that “the manner of death was accidental … due to perforation of the colon,” a police spokesman said.

“The information that we have is that people would find this place via chat rooms on the Web,” said Sgt. John Urquhart of the King County Sheriff’s Department.

What Time Is It?

Maybe it’s the effect of too many beers. Why do many Singaporeans think that Tiger Beer is inferior to alcohol from foreign lands?

Owned by Asia Pacific Breweries, Tiger recently won the Wine & Spirit International Beer Challenge Silver Medal (Premium Lager), and the World Beer Cup Gold Medal (European-Style Pilsener) in 2004.

Today, it is supported by 22 breweries in nine countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Thailand, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka, and slurped up bymillions of drinkers in over 60 countries worldwide.

Tiger was also named a CoolBrand in the UK this year, for the second year running, amongst the galore of well-known brands.

Stephen Cheliotis, Chairman of the CoolBrands Council, says: “Tiger Beer is renowned as one of Asia’s finest exports, successfully expanding from one market to over sixty in a short space of time, largely due to its preceding reputation as a distinctive high quality brand. Achieving such status with little promotion sets Tiger Beer at a level above its rivals, as word of mouth about the brands inherent raises it above its peers. Tiger Beer has proven its strength, not only by winning a string of awards for its unique taste, but also by remaining at the forefront of Asian culture.”

Ok, so it’s damn good. So why don’t Singaporeans think so?

After all, Tiger has even engaged Jessica Alba to front its latest TVC!

Yes, this Jessica Alba!

Jessica Alba - new Tiger girl

So why? Just what is wrong? Is it the taste? Is it true the potentially malicious rumours/fiction/truth/whatever that all the premium grade beer is exported out, and poor Singaporeans are left with lower-grade alcohol to water our taste-buds?

I think i know the problem.

Jessica Alba is super hot, no doubt. But she does not exactly represent a Singapore brand.

But what we really need is Fiona Xie, Michelle Chia, Samantha Tan and Ezann Lee as Tiger girls!

Just the thought is making me thirsty. Give this man a Tiger!

Discover Cyber-hugging anyone ?

When humans interact or build a relationship, we always like to have phyiscal touch. In the past, being able to touch your loved ones, friends and associates by hugging or a simple hand shake was relatively easy, as your loved ones would mostly be living in close proximity.

These days, with the internet, - the ability to communicate around the global almost instantly and rampant immigration, we find ourselves having to maintain relationships across contienents. As great a tool the internet maybe, it still lacks the ability for phyiscal touch.

Today, scientists from Singapore have already moved to the next dimension, according to Reuters. They devised a vibration jacket for chickens (bird flu prevention ?) and are studying electronic children’s pajamas for cyberspace hugs, while researching for ways to transmit the sense of touch over the Internet.

How does this work ?

A wireless jacket for chickens or other pets can be controlled with a computer and gives the animal the feeling of being touched by its owner, researchers at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) told Monday’s edition of The Straits Times. The next step would be to use the same concept to transmit hugs over the Internet, they said.

“These days, parents go on a lot of business trips, but with children, hugging and touching are very important,” the paper quoted NTU Associate Professor Adrian David Cheok as saying.

NTU is thinking of a pajama suit for children, which would use the Internet to adjust changes in pressure and temperature to simulate the feeling of being hugged. Parents wearing a similar suit could be “hugged” back by their kids, he paper said.

Is Drinking Beer Good for you ?

These days, it seems relatively easy to contract cancer. Personally, I have known many people who have contracted the disease. With such ease in contracting cancer, one should look for ways to try and prevent it all together. It seems that beer has some cancer preventing properties.

Researchers at Oregon State University discovered a anti-cancer compound in beer. This compound found only in hops and the main product they are used in - beer - has rapidly gained interest as a micronutrient that might help prevent many types of cancer. The researchers first discovered the cancer-related properties of this flavonoid compound called xanthohumol about 10 years ago.

“Xanthohumol is one of the more significant compounds for cancer chemoprevention that we have studied,” said Fred Stevens, a researcher with OSU’s Linus Pauling Institute and an assistant professor of medicinal chemistry in the College of Pharmacy. “The published literature and research on its properties are just exploding at this point, and there’s a great deal of interest.”

What if you found out your partner was a Porn Star ?

This question just came across my mind. I was wondering: how many of you would mind if your life partner used to be a porn star ?

Here is the scenario : You are married happily for 5 years, when one day your colleague comes to you and says “Hey, I saw your partner on a porn video” and shows you the video of your partner having a great time in the film.

After some investigation, you find out the film was made before you got to know your partner, and that your partner has stopped being a porn star after knowing you, but he/she didn’t tell you about his/her past.

What would your reaction be after such a find? And how would you react if it was you would was in the movie?

For me, I am not sure what I would do in the given situation. My conclusion would be to come clean before you get married. This would help lessen any unwelcoming situations.
